The Washington DC protest kicks off a multi city tour where injured Smithfield workers from the Tar Heel, North Carolina plant and their growing contingent of supporters will attempt to deliver a letter to Paula Deen asking her to keep the promise she made on the Larry King Show. Deen committed to meet with workers who are trying to inform her about abusive working conditions. Deen has a lucrative endorsement deal with Smithfield and will appear at the Convention Center as part of the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show.
Human Rights Watch issued two reports documenting widespread dangerous conditions at the Tar Heel plant that result in high rates of often crippling injuries. Legal rulings found that the company assaulted, intimidated, illegally fired and used racial epithets against its workers,
"While Paula promotes her buttery recipes and family values, we fear she is unaware of where her food comes from" said Plymouth Congregational Church Pastor Rev. Grayland Hagler. "As fans of Paula Deen and advocates of human decency, we are asking Paula to have a heart and listen to these workers"

On September 12, the Bergen County (NJ) Central Trades and Labor Council passed a resolution calling on Smithfield to "[o]bey the law, by providing a safe workplace, giving Smithfield workers the right to chose a union...free from interferene of any kind."
On August 6, Smithfield Tar Heel plant worker Jose Ozorio Figueroa was terminated. Company representatives claim it was for showing up four minutes late to his shift, but Ozorio believes that he was fired for his union activities. Read his statement.

On August 1, 2007, the City of Boston passed a resolution calling on the city to "review its purchasing of any products from the Smithfield Packing Company in Tar Heel, North Carolina....and suspend these purchases until the company ends all form of abuse, inimidation and violence against its workers..."
